Exploration in Parts — Part Legs

Dates: 22-25 October 2020
Opening Hours: 14:00-19:00

Clearing the space by closing my eyes, parting my legs, and spreading my breath through my body. I send my mind to my legs, or maybe my legs to my mind, it becomes tangled at times. Their forms flexing and spasming to the thought of being removed, detached and independent. A vision of flesh and stretch and leg turning clockwise at the knee, squirming freely in my mind, losing shape. I call out to them or they to me, I cannot tell. We improvise. Sounding and breathing together.

Exploration in Parts — Part Legs is an ongoing investigation that explores the body/voice relationship. In previous work, I vocalized my frustrations at my failed attempts to feel physically united.  I move now to a calmer approach, viewing the power of the segmented body and considering my parts as collaborative and inspirational entities. Through this installation I bring forth my findings and questions using projected image, speakers, and a collage of field recordings and voice.

The 19th and 20th century archive of media history is littered machines which have been predominantly operated by women, some more famously that others. In an extensive artistic research project, Sebes has traced, reappropriated and reforged these devices to create a dynamic woman-machine interface. Her performance links vocal simulators with sewing machines and other foot pedal mechanisms to investigate the role of gender in the designs, functioning and social construction of these mechanisms.

Nicolas Daleman
Buttom-up

Dates: 6-8 of November 2020
Opening hours: tbc

Daleman_Bottom-up.jpg

Bottom-up is a multichannel sound installation that explores the possibilities of modular synthesizers and cables as sculptural material. Sonically, the perception of sound in the vertical plane is juxtaposed with visual elements.  By dragging attention to the material in the top of the sculpture, this installative piece re-contextualized the imaginaries of the sounds that live above us.

Ben Glas
Walking Melody

Dates: 28th of October - 13th of November 2020 (Intermittent)
Opening hours: 13:00-18:00

"Walking Melody" is a relativistically interactive sound installation, situated in the hallway in front of Aperto Raum. 6 digital guitar tuners play their own separate tonal notes in the transitory space and allow each individual passing pedestrian to physically walk and compose their own perception, via their own active movement.

Lara Gallagher and Cormac Fitzpatrick
Unloosing a Flight of a Thousand Butterflies

Dates: 9-12 of November 2020
Opening hours: 13:00-18:00

Lara - Unloosing.jpg

‘Sensitive symbols of nature, of that profligate nature which squanders pollen while unloosing a flight of a thousand butterflies. Of that inscrutable nature which refuses to reveal to us whether it is a blind succession of causes and effects or the timid hesitant groping development of an idea’. This project presents itself as an installation exploring wind chimes. However these chimes are unlike the stereotypical. They bring to light the unseen and unheard objects found buried deep within the crevasses of Berlin’s streets. Such ‘memorabilia’ present themselves semiotically – the throttling kitchen utensils sliding past the shattered car door; an unexplored story - each object delicately chosen to create a fascinating clash of signs; a simulacra, illustrating the contingent nature of reality, always beyond our grasp.

Sonic Bath is a one-to-one sound performance that aims to explore the physicality and material dimension of sound, and how it affects the body, the awareness, and the consciousness of the listener. The work trives inspirations from the practices of deep meditation and sonic massage as relaxation and grounding techniques, exploring the tactile and textural characteristics of sound in relation with the proximity between the sound sources and the listener. Sonic Bath is a powerful sound experience that explores the effect of sound as vibrational force, through an embodied listening  that could invoke a deep meditative state. It is specifically realized to address and slow down the parasympathetic nervous system, which is responsible for regulating the body’s unconscious actions, like resting, and to invite into an aural journey that leads to a state of trance. The work exploring sound through the concept of vibration and within the critical frame of sonic new materialism; wants to investigate the liveliness and agential capacities of the (sound) matter. Sonic Bath sees the intermaterial ability of sound as capacity to overcome the concept of individual self, often responsible for sufferance and grief in Western culture. With this work, the artist Francis Sosta aims to invite a space for resilience, transmutation and integration to unfold, where sound constitutes a powerful vehicle for meta-physical collective healing and transformation.

Empty When Full is a minimalist composition that invites you to experience dualities of a system of accumulation incapable of regulating itself, and speculates on its self-destruction.
Time-space and fragility-violence are the dualities brought into play in a feedback scheme that manifests the relationship between structure and operation through the resonant continuity of a discontinuous body, a composition whose indeterminate duration exists between infinity and the destruction of the system.
